Last April, I ran an article of how to lengthen the life of razor blades: a strop made of a strip of blue jean material.
A reader sent me a suggestion. Pour a little olive oil in a small cup or container. Before and after shaving, rinse the razor. Put it blade-first into the container after shaving.
It works. I have not changed the blade in two months.

Shaving & Saving Just became a subscription member to this site. Wanted to thank Dr. North for posting an article in "Tip of The Week" last year regarding prolonging the use of razor blades. The article described how the primary reason for razor blades becoming less effective after a short number of uses was due to the fact that dried soap and hair particles would collect in back of the blades causing them to be less effective after each use. This was not necessarily due to the blades becoming "dull" as one may think, but simply because the soap residue and dried hair particles would stick to the blade and cause them to be less effective after a small number of uses. The article went on to suggest placing the razor or blade portion in a small dish which had some olive or cooking oil in it. This wold prevent the soap and hair particles from sticking to the blade. Since I shave both my head & my face, and was spending about $14.00 a month for a (4) pack of replacement blades, I decided to give this a try in July, 2012. I placed some olive oil in the plastic cap to my shaving gel, and would drop the blade in it after each shave. I did not replace the first blade until October, 2012. The blade would have lasted longer but for the disintegration of the rubber stopper/border at the bottom of the blade. So I chose to replace it. I just replaced the 2nd blade since last July. I used to spend about $14.00 per month on blades for a yearly cost of $168.00. I now will spend about $14.00 a year on blades thanks to this simple but effective technique which saves me about $154.00 per year. My yearly cost for this subscription site for which I am just "scratching the surface" in is about $179.40. Subtract from that my yearly savings of $154.00 for one small bit of implemented practical advice, and my net investment for my subscription is about $25.40...Thanks Dr. North!
