Cool LED Bulbs
Oct. 22, 2011
Last month, I found that my basement office was 5 degrees hotter than the basement. It was too hot to work comfortably.
My wife said it was the 8 incandescent ceiling bulbs. She recommended that I replace them with sealed fluorescent bulbs at $5 each. I did. The room cooled off.
But the new bulbs had an annoying defect. It took two minutes for them to reach full brilliance. They were also hot. They were not incandescent hot, but hot.
So, I researched the new LED bulbs. I found one for $15. It matched the brightness of the original bulbs: 450 lumens. I bought it. Sure enough, it did not even get warm. It also reached full brilliance instantly. LEDs last even longer than fluorescent bulbs. Also, if you drop one and it breaks, there is no mercury threat when cleaning up the shards.
I bought 7 more.
I suppose I will put back in the incandescent bulbs if my office gets significantly colder in winter. That would mean cheap heating.
