Why Can't Google Make Up Its Corporate Mind About Its Advanced Search Format?

For months, Goog;e has briefly substituted a long, complex page for Advanced Search.

On Firefox today, I got this around 6 a.m.

For a year, I have gotten this screen for a day. Then it disappears for a couple of months.

With IE 8, I got the usual short screen at 6:02 a.m.

I much prefer the short screen.

There has to be a reason. I just cannot figure out what.
