Dan Roam is the author of the best-selling book, The Back of the Napkin. Here, he presents his findings and his technique in front of an audience of Microsoft executives.
His thesis that a six-step analysis can help solve problems is persuasive. His demonstration that stick figures can help convey information is even more persuasive.
But what grabbed me when I saw it was the format of the video. It replicated the format of the lecture. You can see him lecturing on stage, but you pay no attention. Your eyes go to the screen.
The screen in the video is digital. It is clear. He is drawing on a tablet computer, In 2009, this was probably a PC. Today, it would be an iPad or an Android-based tablet.
He does not look at the screen.
It is a live presentation. He is on stage, moving around. But he is not the center of attention. His markings on the screen are. He gets his message across.
This is the most effective combination of voice, presence, images, and technology I have ever seen.
I have been a public speaker for over 50 years. If I were starting out today, this is the technology I would use.
The video is here. I wish there were a YouTube video I could embed.
